Gratuity is a big part of what your driver earns and their desire and effort to provide your group with terrific service should be rewarded. Generally the standard amount of gratuity that is customary is from 15 percent to 20 percent based on the level of service you have received. There are other things to take into consideration and in some cases, for extended tours and charters of more than one week, even a 10 percent gratuity may be more than sufficient.
We do as a general rule bill the first 15 percent of gratuity into most charters to ensure that drivers do receive that gratuity and know that their high level of service provided will be rewarded. Billing the gratuity into the charter is a great way to remove the hassle of having to collect cash tips from everyone on board at the conclusion of a charter if all passengers who are part of the group are expected to participate in providing gratuity. When possible, we always suggest clients collect this from their group upfront and either designate one person to be in charge of making sure the driver gets gratuity or to include this in the cost of the charter to be paid in advance.
